What to Do After a Car Accident
Imagine returning to a parked vehicle, only to find the rear bumper lying on the ground behind it. The driver of the other vehicle is still at the scene, along with passengers, and there is damage to their vehicle as well.
In this situation, it’s normal for emotions to run high and for many questions to arise: Is everyone okay? Who should be contacted? Where can the car be repaired? Is it even drivable? These questions can be overwhelming, which is why it’s important to know the proper steps to take after an auto accident.
Steps to Take After an Accident
Do not leave the scene. Leaving could result in serious or criminal charges.
Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately.
Assess the damage. If the total damage appears to exceed $5,000 (including all vehicles involved), call the police to assess the scene. If the damage is less than $5,000, the police should still be contacted; they will advise on the next steps.
Move vehicles if safe. Relocate the vehicles to the side of the road to ensure the safety of all, including passing traffic.
Collect driver information. Obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance details, license plate numbers, and driver’s license numbers for all drivers involved.
Collect witness and passenger information. Gather names, addresses, and phone numbers for any witnesses or passengers.
Document the scene. Take notes and photos of the scene, including placement of trees, shrubs, stop signs, signal lights, pedestrian crossings, and any other relevant details. This information will be helpful when reporting the claim.
Report the claim promptly. Contact your insurance broker or agent as soon as possible. They will answer questions and guide you through the claims process.
Additional Tips
Stay calm.
Avoid arguments with other drivers, passengers, witnesses, or onlookers.
Only share your account of the accident with the police.
Never admit liability at the scene.
If a tow truck arrives without your request, do not allow your car to be taken. You have the right to choose a tow company, or your broker can provide guidance.
Most importantly, stay safe.
